2009 Miss Aggie Award

Sophomore Sydney Colson (Houston, Texas) was presented with the Miss Aggie Award which is annually given to a women's basketball student-athlete who displays loyalty and commitment to the university and program. As A&M's floor general and one of the most-outgoing student-athletes on campus, Colson played and started in all 35 games of the season dishing out 106 assists and making the second-most steals on the team (75).

Ooops...They Did It Again!

Saturday, April 11th our Big 3 came to play. Showing why they are among the top players not only in Houston and Texas, but in the NATION, they combined for 40 points, Nay and Diamond 16 each, Clarissa added 8. Nay was also selected MVP in one of the most exciting All Star Games I have seen in Houston. by: Simmie Colson III

Double Trouble Hit Girls All-State

Job Well Done!

Presence at the Point

"It's easy being the underdog, because you're just having fun and playing loose. You're not supposed to beat the top-ranked teams. This year we're one of the top teams and the one that needs to be taking care of business every time we step on the court," she said.
Though the Aggies are only fourth now in conference, there is still a lot of season left to be played. They just knocked off No. 25 Oklahoma State on the road and are looking to carry that momentum into Austin. Colson said as long as they handle their business and play their style of basketball then the sky is the limit. If Colson can come back from ACL surgery in four months, then there's no reason to doubt her when she said this team can go farther than last year , and farther than last year means a trip to the Final Four come April. This is one leader who has earned the right to be followed.

Cajuns were led by Krystal Motley

The Cajuns were led by Krystal Motley.  The freshman posted just her second double-digit scoring effort of her career, scoring a career-best 11 points on the night.

Colson overcomes injury to lead Aggies

Texas A&M point guard Sydney Colson is averaging 5.7 points, 3.9 assists and 2.3 steals.

more on...

As New Year's resolutions begin to waver under the weight of winter's dog days, it's worth considering the case of Texas A&M point guard Sydney Colson. After finishing her freshman season as a reserve on the team that reached the Elite Eight for the first time in program history, Colson resolved to make the leap to starting point guard after the graduation of A'Quonesia Franklin, fifth-best all time in assists in the Big 12.
The small matter of a torn ACL over the summer wasn't about to derail the resolution.
Six months after surgery to repair the torn ligament in her right knee, Colson is already hip deep in the long slog that is the march to St. Louis and the Final Four. She played eight minutes in the Aggies' season opener Nov. 14 (128 days after going under the knife), moved into the starting lineup two games later and is averaging more than 21 minutes per game for the season. Only seniors Takia Starks, Danielle Gant and La Toya Micheaux average more minutes per game, a fact that underscores how important the relatively untested sophomore from Houston is to an experienced team.
"Sydney Colson is the Pied Piper," coach Gary Blair said. "She's never met a stranger. She's a good-looking kid. She's always got a smile on her face. She is fun to coach. But sometimes the hair gets grayer [coaching her]. I'm having to live with a little bit more patience."

Westfield wallops Tomball 64-41

Mustangs find win column on road
By JENNY DIAL Houston Chronicle
Jan. 6, 2009, 7:22PM

"We practice that a lot," Hopes said. "Everyone on the team knows how to move, get open and make smart decisions." Tomball was led by Frank's 18 points."We knew that they had some scorers, so we couldn't just let up on them because Buck wasn't playing," Westfield coach Tracey Waller said. With the win, Westfield improved to 4-0 in district play and 18-4 overall.

It took a quarter for Westfield to turn up the tempo, but once it did, the Mustangs made a 64-41 win over Tomball almost look easy.
On Tuesday night, the Mustangs traveled to Tomball, which was playing without leading scorer Savanna Buck. Buck injured her knee against Spring in the Cougars' first district game of the season, but should be back in action for the next game.
Tomball (18-5, 2-2 District 13-5A) kept it close for a quarter, largely due to junior Taylor Frank's inside play. Franks had nine points in the first quarter and Westfield led 14-11. In the second quarter, Westfield guard Gevenia Carter turned up the heat. Carter had two steals for fastbreak layups and spurred a 14-0 Mustang run to end the half.
"We are a quick team and that's our style," Carter said. "So we talked about getting the tempo up, moving the ball and just running nonstop. Once we did that, we were able to pull away."
Westfield's speed on defense was a big key in the second quarter. The Mustangs guards kept Tomball off balance and the Cougars committed five travelling violations, leading to quick scores for Westfield.
"You have to get your defense going to get your offense going," Carter said.
In the second half, Tomball collapsed on Carter and limited her looks. Carter adjusted though and found Simone Hopes. Hopes dumped in 19 of her 23 points in the second half and Westfield kept the game out of reach.

Houlette Lead Hoyas Past Orange

January 3, 2009

The Hoyas came out fired up with Karee Houlette (Houston, Texas Cypress Springs) hitting the opening three of the game in her first career start. Georgetown continued to roll taking a 7-0 lead before Syracuse could get on the board. Alexandria, Va./Thomas-Edison and Chesapeake Va./Indian-River both contributed to the early run.

2008 Houston Insiders Summer Showcase

This standout from Westfield HS has decided to continue her education and basketball career at the University of Central Florida. She broke into the starting lineup as a freshman and was named Newcomer of The Year, has been district MVP the past two years and also All State the past two years. She has been nothing but a joy to have on our AAU team where she jumped onto the scene against star studded West Coast Elite and Georgia Metros scoring double digits against both in 2006. She helped lead her team to a 2nd place finish at BOB last year and 3rd this year in the shootout division along with her AAU team finishing first in the Gulf this year while also being ranked among the top 100 prospects by Hoopgurlz. She is a born leader that did everything that was asked of her, even came in early at practice to help with the younger kids. Nay, you have been nothing but a joy and I know you will do great things at UCF. From your Insider family, we love you and will be watching!

The coaches commented on all of our kids, Jade and Sheena for their defense, Audrey for her fundamentals. Hannah was a finalist in the free throw shooting contest, that's no surprise and Sydney made the finals of the Hotshot competition which is also no surprise. The new kids also showed out, the big girl winning the one on one competition and the PG leading her team to the three on three championship. Great job ladies, I am very proud of you for competitng and making me look smarter than what I am!

Lamar hoopsters reach playoffs

The Lamar girls basketball team notched one of the biggest upsets of the Class 5A playoffs, stunning District 19-5A champion Eisenhower 54-52 last week in a Region III bi-district game.
"Cinco Ranch beating Nimitz (50-42) in the second round was probably more of a surprise, but ours was pretty close," Meadough said. Lamar frustrated Eisenhower with its half-court game, flawlessly executing their 1-3-1 zone defense. Meanwhile, Krystal Motley pumped in 24 points and Alycea Price contributed 10. But the Redskins' luck ran out in the next round as Lamar fell to Elsik 62-46 in an area contest. Motley scored 18 points and Alex Heaggs 15 to lead the way. "The game was close in the second quarter, and we were only down by 10 points at the half," Meadough said. "But we got away from our game plan a little bit."
Still, it was another fine season for Lamar, which finished with a 20-9 mark.

Posted Tue, 07/24/2007 - 13:08 Texas seems to be supplying the nation with top prospects, including Cokie Reed of Hewitt, plus other items from Basketball on the Bayou.

Speaking of guards, we say "yay" to Gevenia "Nay" Carter, a strong, quick, 5-foot-8 guard in the 2009 class who has plenty of shake, strong body control on penetrations and a legit jumper. A number of her teammates on the Houston Insiders also can pull from long-distance, but Carter is the best of the lot.
